Books for Bastards #5

Continuing on with my recent book posts, I drop my most anticipated releases of 2015. This is a good year for sequels!

This is book 2 of the Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne and it actually dropped in January. I haven't had a go at it yet, but I loved the first in the series, The Emporer's Blades. It's got intrigue, sweet magics, and medieval special forces all tied together with a slick writing style. This novel looks to rectify a major weakness of the first novel, which was a disproportionate amount of attention on the two brothers at the expense of the oldest daughter. This one give me about a 3/5th anticipatory boner.

The 4th entry in the Gentleman Bastard sequence is due out before the end of the year according to the official website. It seems like each book has its own angle. The first was a great caper, the second a pirate adventure, and the third an extremely boring political election. While the last was a major snoozer, the very last chapter was extremely awesome and sets up what seems to be the big bad for the rest of the series. My gripe with the 3rd one is the lack of stakes. It seems they'll be fine whether they win or lose. With the duo going to war in the 4th installment, however, I don't think we'll have that problem! 4/5th boner here.

The 3rd installment of the Powder Mage series just came out in February. I have to say the previous entries are no literary masterpieces, but I found them genuinely entertaining. I'm slightly embarrassed to admit this third one gives me a 2/5th chubb.

The 4th book in the Demon Cycle is due out at the end of March! The first book is one of the best I'd listened to in a long time. The second and third start out by re-hashing events from the 1st book, which was interesting and also extremely boring if you're reading or listening to them back to back. By the end of the third one, though, shit was starting to get extremely epic and just about ended in a literal cliffhanger. This new one looks like there should be no more flashback dicking around and just forward progression so my book boner is at 4/5ths.

This is the 3rd book in the Raven's Shadow series and due out in July of 2015. I actually read both of the previous entries while on back to back trips this summer and absolutely blew threw them. The main bad guys in this series are incredibly creepy and awesome. The second book had quite a few revelations about their nature so everything is set up for an epic scrum in this third entry. 100% boner here.

Honorable mentions...

It looks like Book 3 of the Traitor Son Cycle by Miles Cameron is tentatively due out in October of 2015. I'm currently enjoying the second book in that series on audio.

A sequel to the Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson is expected in November. This would either be book 5 of the Mistborn series or book 2 in a new sequel series. Sanderson is a writing machine so I'm betting that November date will hold!

Book 2 of the Shattered Seas series by Joe Abecrombie just came out in Feb. The first was a light tale compared to Abercrombie's usual stuff. I will pick this one up when I have a chance.

Sadly, no word on the third Rothfuss installment, The Doors of Stone, or the 6th Song of Ice and Fire book, The Winds of Winter.
