Entry #3 for the Bastards Challenge #1

At the Brawler Bash earlier this year one of my opponents had an excellent looking Empire army that included a Griffon rider.  While not uncommon, what made it special was that he had used one of the plastic toy Griffons from Michaels.  It was repositioned to be rearing up and repainted to fit in with the theme of his army.  Pictures are included with my Brawler Bash entries on this blog.
Over the last 8 months, I have been thinking about if there were any of these "alternative" models that I could make use for in my armies.  Unfortunately, there really was not anything specific to one of my existing armies, though Storm of Magic opened up some new possibilities.  Finally, when Joe laid out the first challenge I knew I had to be part of it.  Having narrowly beaten him on the table at Blood in the Sun I figured I should take my shot at beating him in a painting competition as well.  :)
A few weekends ago I decided to spend a Saturday afternoon picking over the offerings at my local Michaels.  None of the Dragons really caught my attention and they did not have the Phoenix, which I thought would be interesting to repaint.  As nothing jumped out at me I inevitably made my selection from the clearance bin as nothing says cheap quite like the clearance bin.   I purchased the mythical Chimera which upon closer examination is actually an excellent sculpt.  Its pose reminds me a little bit of the masterful resin work of art from Maelstrom Games, which is the Terror of Fortriu.   Plus I could use this model for a certain spell that we all know about.

Therefore, as of right now I am planning to paint the Chimera.   However, with all of my Dwarf business of late I may inevitably end up with something “different” for the competition.  We will just have to wait and see how it plays out.
